Mirena IUDs are a relatively new way for women to prevent pregnancy while lessening the effects of menstruation. They are growing in popularity as well, chiefly among gynecologists—40% of OB-GYNs use them, and 10% of birth control measures prescribed by doctors are IUDs.
They are 99% effective and claim to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years. However, they are not always safe.
Research conducted by the UCLA Medical Center claims that the device “frequently” migrates from its intended spot in the uterus, causing damage to the uterus and surrounding organs. Pregnancies that occur while a Mirena IUD is in place also result in dangerous ectopic pregnancies half of the time, which threatens the life of the mother. Side Effects of Faulty Mirena IUDs
Mirena IUDs work by inserting a small, T-shaped device into the uterus.
This device releases small doses of progestin hormone into the uterus, causing a thick mucus wall to keep sperm from reaching the cervix. In addition, the hormone thins the walls of the uterus, reducing menstrual bleeding and preventing fertilized eggs from sticking to the walls.
There are dangerous ways that a Mirena IUD can cause injury to a woman:
- Septic abortions
- Ectopic pregnancies
- Infection of the uterus
- Perforation of surrounding organs
- IUD embedding into the uterine wall
These effects are all serious—many of them are life-threatening and require surgery to correct. Bayer Pharmaceutical, the IUD manufacturer, claims that these effects are rare and are only a concern to very few women. However, recent studies have shown that these effects may be more common than Bayer is claiming.
