Future Motion Inc., the manufacturer of Onewheel GT self-balancing electric skateboards, has announced a recall of the product. According to their website, the recreational devices pose a “crash hazard that can result in serious injury or death”– and they have.

On September 29th, 2023, Future Motion, Inc. announced the recall of 300,000 Onewheel Self-Balancing Electric Skateboards (CPSC.gov). They have received dozens of reports of injured riders, including at least four reported deaths within recent years.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has encouraged riders to immediately stop using the Onewheel, or to download a new software in the Onewheel app that allegedly fixes the dysfunction with a new “Haptic Buzz” alert. Only time will tell if Future Motion’s attempt to prevent more injuries will prove effective.
As reported by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the manufacturer of Onewheel GT Electric Skateboards, Future Motion, Inc., has also recalled the front footpads on the device. The recall applies to approximately 20,500 units and includes footpads sold with the electric skateboard or independently as replacements.
A safety notice issued by the company noted that it has “received 813 reports of board operation after dismount, including 11 injuries.” Injuries ranged in severity but included “bruises, friction burns, and a twisted ankle.” Furthermore, Future Motion admitted that the footpads on the Onewheel GT electric skateboard could “fail to disengage after the rider has dismounted.” The continued operation of the board presents an injury risk to bystanders.
