Bailey Cowan Heckaman PLLC is reviewing potential cases from victims who suffered personal injury or lost a loved one in accidents involving Future Motion’s Onewheel mobility device.

October 2023 Update: Future Motion has officially recalled Onewheel electric skateboards due to crash hazard and four deaths reported. Read the report by the Consumer Product Safety Commision and our firm's comment on the Onewheel recall. December 2022 Update: "The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged consumers to stop using Future Motion's Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboard. What Is Onewheel?

A Onewheel is a single-wheel transportation board often referred to as an electric skateboard. It is self-balancing and can propel a rider up to 20 miles per hour, depending on the model. The sports board is propelled by body movements and is manufactured by Future Motion, Inc.

Future Motion, Inc. is a California-based company established in 2013 by founder and CEO Kyle Doerksen. Onewheel was the first product launched by the venture-backed company. Current models include the Onewheel GT, Pint X, and Pint. Discontinued or upgraded models include the Onewheel, Onewheel+, and Onewheel+ XR.

Is the Onewheel Defective?

Since its launch, the Onewheel has been the subject of multiple personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits. Allegations against the manufacturer include that the product itself contains a dangerous defect that can result in serious injury or death to riders.

Several riders have been injured or lost their lives due to the device suddenly stopping causing a rider to nosedive without warning. Additionally, injured parties argue that the pushback feature can cause a rider to lose their balance presenting a significant risk of injury.

In 2022, Onewheel manufacturer Future Motion, Inc. issued a recall of the front footpads for the Onewheel GT. According to a safety notice, the recall comes on the heels of hundreds of reports that the board continued to operate after a rider dismounted. Approximately 20,000 units were affected by the recall, which applied to footpads installed on the device and sold separately.

Onewheel Lawsuits Target Nosedive Accidents, Pushback & Possible Defects

The Onewheel is a self-balancing, battery-powered transportation device (sometimes called a hover board) that allows riders to stand on a skateboard-like deck propelled by a single tire. The Onewheel system uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to help riders balance and steer using their weight and positioning on the board. It can reach speeds of up to 20 mph or more.

In recent years, both the Onewheel and the Onewheel+ XR have gained a following of passionate riders, many of whom have a healthy respect for its learning curve and potential risks.

Unfortunately, not all riders were prepared for the possible defects that may contribute to serious crashes. This includes:

  • Onewheel nosedive. "Nosedive" is a predicament where the Onewheel motor is alleged to suddenly shut off and slam forward into the ground. Nosediving, if it occurs, can cause riders to be violently thrown from the Onewheel.
  • Pushback. Onewheel is designed to provide riders with a “pushback” that creates a sudden motor cut-out sensation when the device is reaching its limitations, climbing or descending hills, or nearing battery depletion. However, the pushback feature may inhibit a rider’s ability to balance, steer, and remain upright.

Even when riders dawn appropriate safety gear, respect the Onewheel, and recognize signs of pushback, they may still experience serious accidents and injuries if the device unexpectedly shuts off and nosedives.

Common Onewheel Injuries

Lawsuits filed across the country include details of life-threatening injuries caused by Onewheel nosedive and pushback accidents. Potential harm from the device is widespread and ranges in severity.

Common injuries due to Onewheel accidents:

  • Broken bones
  • Friction burns
  • Concussions
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Dislocated shoulders
  • Severe lacerations
  • Paralysis
  • Ligament Damage
  • Head and neck trauma

Individuals injured in a Onewheel accident are strongly encouraged to contact an attorney as soon as possible.

Has Anyone Died on a Onewheel?

At least five people have died in Onewheel accidents across the country. Numerous others have experienced severe, debilitating injuries, including concussion, paralysis, traumatic brain injury, and more. It is believed that there are more victims who have yet to come forward on behalf of themselves or a loved one who was injured or killed in these devastating accidents.

What Type of Compensation Can Victims Get After an Accident?

Individuals who are injured or have lost a loved one in a Onewheel accident might be entitled to compensation. To get the recovery you deserve, you need to seek medical treatment immediately for any injuries and consult with an attorney to determine if you have a valid claim for damages.

Potential damages in a Onewheel accident case include compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of future earning capacity
  • Mental anguish
  • Emotional distress
  • Pain and suffering

Onewheel riders or those who have lost a loved one only have a limited amount of time to file a lawsuit based on personal injury or wrongful death. It is crucial to act quickly to determine your legal options.
