A sold-out night at the Astroworld Festival in Houston saw a deadly crowd surge that resulted in the wrongful death of eight concertgoers and injury to many others.
According to firsthand accounts, the chaos began amid rapper and Astroworld organizer Travis Scott’s performance. The show continued for another 40 minutes as the crowd surged, people lost consciousness near the stage, and an ambulance attempted to make its way to those who needed medical attention. Camera operators ignored the concertgoers' pleas for help. Up on stage, Scott played through his entire set.
Multiple news outlets have reported that at least 25 people were hospitalized after the incident. Several of the hospitalized victims are under the age of 18. And of the eight tragically lost lives, the youngest was a 14-year-old boy.
Now, in the wake of the tragedy, the first lawsuits have been filed against Scott and other Astroworld organizers.

What Is a Crowd Surge?
A “crowd surge” is when a high volume of people rush the stage, creating the potential for serious injury or death due to tightly packed bodies, trampling, impact injuries, and the like. The force of a crowd surge can be “strong enough to bend steel.”
Who Is Liable for the Tragedy at Astroworld?
Most lawsuits filed so far have named Travis Scott and other organizers of Astroworld as defendants.
However, law enforcement officials are investigating the exact cause of the crowd surge, aiming to uncover how the surge began and why security guards and other event staff were unable to contain it.
There are no definitive answers at this time, but officials are reviewing video footage of the concert and hearing witness testimony to learn more about how the crowd surge began.
